Getting Around Morocco: Transport Guide

Morocco is easiest to plan when you choose transport route by route. Rail is excellent for some city pairs, coaches fill many of the gaps, taxis handle local journeys, and a rental car becomes useful when the places you want to visit are poorly served by scheduled transport.

Do not start with the assumption that one mode is best for the whole trip. If you prefer not to drive, Morocco without driving turns the same network into practical itineraries.

Trains

ONCF operates the national railway. The current Al Boraq high-speed service links Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat and Casablanca. ONCF publishes Tangier to Casablanca at about 2 hours 10 minutes.

Marrakech is served by conventional rail, not the current high-speed line. The Kenitra to Marrakech high-speed extension is under construction. ONCF says the project is intended to reduce the future Tangier to Marrakech journey to about 2 hours 40 minutes. That is a project target, not a current timetable.

Search your actual date on ONCF before building activities around a train. The ONCF guide covers the network in more detail.

Coaches

For places outside the rail network, check scheduled coaches. CTM sells tickets online, and Supratours complements rail travel on a number of routes.

Do not assume that a route, stop, fare or connection from an old article still operates on your date. Search the complete journey, including the exact boarding and arrival points.

Taxis

Petit taxis are used for urban journeys. Morocco’s tourism authority describes taxi rates as regulated and taxis as metered, while current FCDO advice tells travellers either to agree the fare in advance or check that the taxi is using a meter.

Grand taxis serve different local and intercity needs. Vehicle type, sharing arrangements and local practice can vary, so the old “six passengers in an older Mercedes” description should not be treated as a national specification.

For any unmetered or chartered journey, agree the total price before departure.

Ride apps

Uber officially relaunched in Morocco on 27 November 2025. Uber says the service is available in Casablanca and Marrakech, exclusively through licensed transport vehicles, with other cities planned later.

Do not extrapolate that two-city launch into nationwide Uber coverage.

Other apps can be visible in Moroccan cities, but legal status, driver licensing, insurance and city coverage can differ. Current FCDO advice warns that some taxis booked through ride-sharing apps may be unregulated or uninsured. Check the service you are actually using rather than treating every app as equivalent.

Rental car or no rental car?

A car can make sense for routes with weak scheduled transport, but it is not necessary for a city trip built around the rail corridor.

Compare the complete cost and inconvenience: rental, insurance, fuel, tolls, parking and the fact that the car may sit unused while you explore a medina.

Plan the last mile

A train or coach ticket gets you to a station, not necessarily to your accommodation. Check the walk, taxi, tram or transfer at both ends, especially with luggage, children or an early flight.

That last kilometre is often the difference between a route that looks elegant on a map and one that works in real life.
