Morocco has the best rail network in North Africa and the only high-speed train on the African continent. The ONCF operates services connecting Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Fes, Meknes, and Oujda. The trains are punctual, affordable, and genuinely comfortable.
The Al Boraq High-Speed Line
The Al Boraq connects Tangier to Casablanca in 2 hours and 10 minutes, reaching 320 km/h between Tangier and Kenitra. Africa’s only high-speed service. Comparable to European trains: air conditioning, reserved seating, good legroom. Second class: 150 to 220 MAD. First class adds power outlets and wider seats for 50 to 80 MAD more. An extension to Marrakech is under construction for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Once operational, Tangier to Marrakech will take approximately 2 hours 40 minutes.
Conventional Routes
Casablanca to Marrakech runs every two hours, takes 3 hours, costs 100 to 150 MAD. Casablanca to Fes takes 3h40 via Meknes. Casablanca to Rabat runs every 30 minutes during peak hours. The overnight Marrakech to Tangier train covers the full network while you sleep, though comfort is basic.
Booking and Classes
Book at oncf-voyages.ma (French and Arabic, use Google Translate). Credit cards accepted. For Al Boraq, book in advance during holidays. For conventional trains, walk-up is usually fine. Second class is comfortable for journeys under 3 hours. First class adds 60 to 80 MAD and is worth it for longer trips.
Where Trains Do Not Go
No train to Essaouira, Chefchaouen, Agadir, Ouarzazate, or the Sahara. Use Supratours buses (departing from train stations), CTM intercity buses, or rental cars.
Practical Tips
- Book Al Boraq online 3+ days ahead for holidays. Walk-up is fine for conventional trains.
- Casablanca has multiple stations. Most intercity trains use Casa-Voyageurs.
- Marrakech station is at the edge of Gueliz, 10 minutes by taxi from the medina.
- Bring water and snacks. The onboard trolley is limited.
- The ONCF app works for booking but the website is more reliable.
