The Perfect 10-Day Morocco Itinerary for First-Timers

Ten days is enough time to see the imperial cities, sleep in the Sahara, cross the Atlas Mountains, and still have time for a day at the coast. This itinerary balances the essential stops with enough breathing room that you do not spend the entire trip in a car.
Days 1 to 3: Marrakech
Fly into Marrakech. Three nights to explore the medina, souks, Bahia Palace, Majorelle Garden, and the food scene. Take a cooking class on day two. On day three, do a day trip to the Ourika Valley or play a round at one of the Marrakech golf courses. Stay in a riad in the medina for the full experience.
Days 4 to 5: Atlas Mountains and the Desert Road
Drive south over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 meters) to the Dades Valley. The drive is spectacular: switchbacks, kasbahs, and a landscape that changes from green to red to gold. Stop at Ait Benhaddou (UNESCO site). Night 4 in the Dades Gorge. Day 5, continue to Merzouga for a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes and a night in a desert camp.
Days 6 to 7: Fes
Drive from the desert to Fes (approximately 7 to 8 hours, or break the drive with a night in Midelt). Two nights in Fes. Hire a guide for the medina (the largest car-free urban area in the world). Visit the tanneries, Al Quaraouiyine University, and the mellah. Eat at the food stalls near Bab Boujloud.
Days 8 to 9: Chefchaouen or the Coast
Option A: Drive to Chefchaouen (4 hours from Fes). Two nights in the blue city. Walk the medina, photograph the blue walls, hike to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint. Option B: Drive to Essaouira (6 hours from Fes via highway). Beach, port, art galleries, and a completely different pace.
Day 10: Departure
Drive to Casablanca or Marrakech for your flight. If departing from Casablanca, visit the Hassan II Mosque (the only mosque in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors for guided tours) before heading to the airport.
Practical Tips
- Rent a car for this itinerary. Buses cover the major routes but add significant time and limit flexibility.
- The desert night is cold from October to March. Bring warm layers for the camp.
- Book the desert camp in advance, especially during peak season (December to February).
- Carry cash for the road. ATMs are scarce between Ouarzazate and Merzouga.
- This itinerary can be reversed (starting in Fes, ending in Marrakech) depending on flight availability.
