The Best Day Trips from Marrakech: Mountains, Coast, and Desert

Marrakech is extraordinary, but after three days in the medina you need a change of scenery. The Atlas Mountains rise 45 minutes south, the Atlantic coast is 2.5 hours west, and the Agafay desert stretches 40 minutes southwest.
Ourika Valley
The closest mountain escape: one hour south through dramatic scenery to Berber villages along the Ourika River. The main attraction is a hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls (45 minutes uphill, guides 100 to 150 MAD). The trail is steep and slippery. Wear proper shoes. Restaurants along the river serve tagine with mountain views.
Imlil and the High Atlas
Gateway to Mount Toubkal trekking but also works as a day trip. The 1.5-hour drive crosses walnut groves and Berber villages. Short valley walks of 2 to 4 hours loop through neighboring settlements. A local guide costs 300 to 500 MAD for a half day. Lunch at guesthouse restaurants costs 60 to 100 MAD.
Essaouira
Essaouira is a full day trip but one of the best. Supratours bus takes 2.5 hours, costs 100 MAD each way. The town offers wind, ocean, art galleries, a compact medina with calm shopping, and grilled sardines at the port for 50 MAD. Leave Marrakech on the 7am bus, take the last bus back around 5 or 6pm.
Ouzoud Waterfalls
The tallest waterfalls in North Africa (110 meters) are 2.5 hours northeast. The falls cascade into a red-rock gorge surrounded by olive groves. Barbary macaques live in the trees. The hike down takes 30 minutes. Shared day tours from Marrakech cost 200 to 400 MAD per person.
Agafay Desert
Not sand dunes (that is the Sahara, 10 hours away) but a rocky scrubland plateau that offers a convincing desert experience. Camel rides, quad bikes, and sunset dinners run 500 to 1,500 MAD. Luxury camps offer overnight glamping. Best as a half-day or evening experience.
Practical Tips
- Leave Marrakech before 9am for Ourika and Imlil. The road gets crowded by mid-morning.
- Essaouira is windy. Bring a jacket even on a warm Marrakech day.
- Ouzoud is busiest on weekends. Go on a weekday.
- Do not book an Agafay 'Sahara experience' thinking it is the real Sahara. Manage expectations.
- A private car and driver for a day trip costs 1,000 to 1,500 MAD and splits well among 3 to 4 people.
