SIM Cards and Mobile Data in Morocco

Morocco has three mobile network operators: Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc and inwi. For a visitor, the useful decision is not which one is “best” nationwide. It is which current offer and coverage fit the places you will actually visit.

Buying a local SIM

Morocco requires mobile subscribers to be identified. ANRT has required operators to identify holders of mobile SIM cards since 2014.

Bring official identification when buying a local SIM and use an operator shop or authorised seller. Do not rely on an anonymous-SIM workaround.

Offers change frequently. Check the operator’s current prepaid options at the point of sale rather than planning around a data allowance or airport price quoted months earlier.

Before leaving, make sure the SIM is active and that mobile data works on your phone.

Coverage

Avoid treating one operator as the permanent winner everywhere. Coverage varies by location and continues to change as networks are expanded.

For an urban trip, compare the operators’ current coverage and offers. For mountains, desert routes or smaller settlements, check the exact route rather than assuming that a national reputation guarantees signal in a particular valley or road section.

Download offline maps before remote travel and keep essential bookings or addresses available without a connection.

5G

ANRT awarded 5G licences to the three operators in July 2025. Commercial 5G launched in Morocco in November 2025.

5G availability still depends on the operator, location, compatible device and offer. A visitor does not need 5G to make a local SIM useful, so choose for the trip rather than for the logo in the status bar.

eSIM

An eSIM can be convenient if your phone supports it and the provider covers Morocco. International travel eSIMs and Moroccan operator products are not one single market, so there is no reliable rule that an eSIM is always more expensive or always avoids identification requirements.

Check:

1. that your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable;
2. the network used in Morocco;
3. the data allowance and validity;
4. whether calls and SMS are included;
5. activation instructions.

Roaming

Do not assume a European roaming entitlement includes Morocco. Some foreign operators sell Morocco add-ons or include it in selected plans, while others charge separately.

Check your own plan before travel. If the terms are poor, disable data roaming until your Moroccan SIM or eSIM is active.

Calling apps

Old reports about VoIP restrictions should not be presented as a current national rule without fresh evidence. Messaging and calling-app behaviour can depend on the network and service. If an internet call matters, test it and keep an ordinary phone-call alternative.
