Morocco’s airports handled 36.3 million passengers in 2025, and summer 2026 brought new records. ONDA, the national airports authority, is expanding them under a programme called Aéroports 2030, with a new terminal at Casablanca and larger terminals at several other airports.
What’s happening
The programme is funded by a government agreement signed in July 2025 that provides MAD 38 billion up to 2030. ONDA’s aim is for the country’s airports to be able to handle 80 million passengers a year. That is a capacity target, not a forecast of how many people will fly.
| Airport | What is planned | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|
| Casablanca Mohammed V | New terminal, a new runway and a high-speed rail station | Under construction; mid-2029 target |
| Marrakech-Menara | Larger, reorganised terminal | Works contracted in 2025; no opening date |
| Agadir-Al Massira | Terminal extension, access roads and car parks | Works contracted in 2025; no opening date |
| Tangier Ibn Battouta | Terminal extension | Main works contract reported awarded in 2026 |
| Fes-Saïss | Expansion | Funded; works award not confirmed |
| Rabat-Salé | Extension and a high-speed rail station | Part of the programme; no dates |
Casablanca is the project that matters most. The new Mohammed V terminal is ONDA’s largest ever investment. Its first phase is designed for 20 million passengers a year. Preparatory works began in July 2025 and the main construction contract was awarded in January 2026.
Why it matters
Passenger numbers set single-day records in summer 2026, and June and July 2030 will bring exceptional demand. The new Casablanca terminal is also designed around a station on the new high-speed line, which would give arriving passengers direct trains to Rabat and, if the line opens on time, to Marrakech. That rail link does not exist yet.
When it might be ready
ONDA’s director general has said the extensions at the other airports will be delivered before 2029, with Casablanca’s new terminal following in 2029. In practice that means:
- Until 2028: building works at Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir and Tangier while the airports stay open.
- 2028 to 2029: the regional extensions are completed and brought into use.
- 2029: Casablanca’s terminal is due for completion, followed by trials before passengers use it. Its rail station depends on the high-speed line’s own 2029 target.
Any of these dates can move. A terminal is open when ONDA announces the date and airlines move in.
What changes for visitors and residents
Some changes are already here. At Casablanca, automatic gates replaced the second passport check for international passengers in March 2025; border formalities themselves have not changed. An operations centre that coordinates airport, airline and border teams has been running since January 2026. At Marrakech and Agadir, drop-off areas, traffic flow and signs outside the terminals were redesigned in 2025. None of this guarantees a particular queue time.
Expect works. Until 2029, building sites can mean hoardings, longer walks and temporary drop-off points. If long walks are difficult, book assistance with your airline when you buy the ticket.
Getting to Casablanca airport. Rail works near the airport have disrupted the airport train, which was replaced by coaches for a period in September 2026. Check ONCF for your date, and see our Casablanca airport guide for the alternatives.
In 2030, book flights to host cities once FIFA publishes the match schedule. For the latest traffic figures, see our news report on the airport programme.
Practical Tips
- Book today's terminals and today's transfers. New capacity only counts once ONDA opens it.
- Expect building works around the terminals at Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir and Tangier until 2029.
- Allow normal connection times. Planned improvements do not justify tighter connections yet.
