Morocco's Airports Pass 22 Million Passengers: What the 2026 Figures Tell Travelers

Morocco’s airports handled 22,282,997 passenger movements from January through July 2026, up 8.77% on the same period in 2025, according to ONDA figures published by the Moroccan government. Casablanca and Marrakech accounted for roughly 60% of that traffic.

For travelers, the useful story is where those movements are concentrated and what is changing in the departure process. A separate mobile boarding-pass rollout, Pax Check, could remove the need for a printed pass on eligible journeys. Neither development establishes how long your next airport queue will take.

Passenger traffic is not tourist arrivals

The headline counts airport passenger movements, not 22 million tourists, foreign visitors or people arriving in Morocco. A person can contribute more than once to traffic totals across different flights. The figures do not identify a unique visitor or explain why someone traveled.

It would therefore be misleading to read this as a tourism-arrivals milestone. Likewise, a seven-month total cannot establish how busy a particular terminal will be on your departure date. The year-on-year comparison covers matching January–July periods; it is not an annual total or a single-day record.

Where the traffic is concentrated

The official report gives these totals for five major airports:

Casablanca and Marrakech together represent roughly 60% of nationwide traffic. That is MoroccoMag’s calculation from the two airport totals divided by the national total, not a separately published ONDA statistic.

These are volumes, not a ranking of airport quality. They cannot tell you which airport has faster security, more reliable baggage delivery or easier connections. International routes account for most movements

International traffic reached 19,894,489 passengers, compared with 2,388,508 on domestic services. Europe accounted for 16,541,007, up 9.29% year on year, making it the largest international market in the report.

The Europe figure describes a route market, not the nationality of everyone on those flights. Nor does the international total mean that all those passengers were foreign tourists. These distinctions matter when comparing airport statistics with tourism headlines.

Nothing in this breakdown measures how full the flights were. Passenger volume alone cannot establish seat availability, fares or spare terminal capacity.

Pax Check: a change to the boarding pass

Airports of Morocco announced Pax Check on July 23, 2026. Its release, carried by MAP on Maroc.ma, describes online check-in through an airline’s app followed by a boarding pass delivered as a secure QR code. Airlines carry out the required document verification beforehand. Within that eligible process, travelers can use the mobile pass at checkpoints and automated gates without a printed boarding pass.

The qualification is important: deployment is progressive, covering airlines that satisfy the necessary technical, operational and regulatory requirements. The announcement does not establish universal airline support or provide a complete airport-by-airport availability list.

For your flight, check the airline’s instructions rather than assuming that having a QR code removes every counter step. The release is not a blanket promise that all passengers traveling with hand luggage can bypass check-in desks. It also gives no measured waiting-time reduction that a traveler can rely on.
