The Strategic Function
Ouarzazate, pronounced roughly war-za-zat, is not a traditional Moroccan city. It was built by the French administration in the 1920s as a garrison town to control the south. Today it serves two industries: international filmmaking and desert tourism logistics.
You do not come here for winding medinas. You come because it is the practical staging ground for anyone heading towards Zagora or Merzouga, and because the region holds some of the most striking kasbah architecture in the country.
The Road from Marrakech
Getting here means crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass through the High Atlas.
Driving it, the road is fully paved but delivers relentless switchbacks and heavy truck traffic. Allow four hours and treat that as a minimum rather than a target. Winter snow and rockfall both close it periodically.
By bus, CTM and Supratours run multiple daily services from Marrakech, taking roughly four and a half hours for around 100 MAD. Book ahead. These buses fill with people travelling for reasons that have nothing to do with tourism.
Ait Benhaddou: The Real Draw
Ouarzazate has its own kasbah, Taourirt, worth an hour. But the architectural reason to be in this region is Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar about 30 kilometres northwest of the city.
It is among the most filmed locations on earth, with credits including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Visiting it well is a question of timing. Large tour groups arrive from Marrakech through the middle of the day. To see it properly, stay in a guesthouse across the river the night before and walk in at sunrise, when the light is better and the ksar is close to empty.
The Film Studios
Ouarzazate houses two main studios, Atlas and CLA. They function as sprawling outdoor museums of leftover sets, with Egyptian temples, Jerusalem streets, and Tibetan monasteries slowly weathering in the desert sun.
A tour takes about two hours. The experience is deliberately raw. This is not a polished theme park, and the appeal is precisely that you are walking through plaster and timber that looked convincing on film and looks like plaster and timber up close.
Practical Tips
- The Tizi n'Tichka pass is prone to rockfall and winter snow. Check road status before driving from Marrakech, and do not drive it after dark.
- Ait Benhaddou sits about 30 km before Ouarzazate coming from Marrakech. Do not skip it, but arrive early to beat the tour buses.
- Book intercity buses at least a day ahead. They are the main transit artery for locals heading south, not a tourist service.
- Do not come expecting nightlife or medina culture. Ouarzazate is a base, and a good one, but it is not the destination.
