Agadir vs Taghazout: Where Should You Stay?
Jump to section
Agadir and Taghazout share an Atlantic coastline but suit different kinds of trips. Agadir is a substantial city with a long beach, hotels, shops and more everyday services. Taghazout is a smaller surf-oriented coastal village north of the city. The right base depends on whether you want a general beach holiday or a surf-first stay.
Quick choice
| What matters most | Agadir | Taghazout |
|---|---|---|
| Main reason to go | City-and-beach holiday | Surfing and small coastal setting |
| Non-surf days | Promenade, market, city restaurants and excursions | Cafés, surf culture and coastal downtime |
| Families | More city services and varied accommodation | Works for some families; check beach conditions and access |
| Without a car | Easier for a compact city-and-beach routine | Check transfers to activities, the airport and Agadir services |
| Working remotely | More urban options; test the room’s internet | Surf-community appeal; test connectivity and workspace carefully |
| Waves | Conditions vary by beach and day | Surf breaks nearby; many are unsuitable for beginners in strong swell |
Choose Agadir if you want variety
Agadir is easier to use as a base when not everyone in the group surfs. You can combine the beach with Souk El Had, city restaurants and day trips. The Agadir city guide covers the broader visitor experience. Check the exact hotel’s distance from the beach and your planned activities rather than assuming everything is walkable.
Choose Taghazout if the trip revolves around surfing
Taghazout has well-known breaks, surf schools and camps. But surf conditions vary with swell, tides, wind and experience level; do not treat every famous point break as a beginner lesson spot. Ask a qualified local instructor where conditions suit your ability that day. See our Taghazout surfing guide for spots and equipment considerations.
Tamraght is another option, particularly if you want a surf-coast base without being in Taghazout village itself. Compare actual accommodation and transport rather than treating the two as interchangeable.
Airport and transport
Both areas generally use Agadir Al Massira Airport (AGA). Transfers depend on your exact address, traffic and the transport arranged. Check the pickup location, final price and arrival-time arrangements before booking. A surf camp may organise transfers, but do not assume they are included.
What about prices?
There is no reliable universal rule that Taghazout is cheaper than Agadir or vice versa. Compare like-for-like accommodation for your dates, and add surf lessons, transport, meals and any included equipment. A package that looks expensive per night may include activities that would cost extra elsewhere; check cancellation conditions.
Our suggested decision
For a first Morocco beach holiday with mixed interests, start by comparing Agadir hotels. For a surf-focused week, compare Taghazout and Tamraght camps, with lesson quality and suitable conditions ahead of the room’s photos. If you have several days, you can visit both without changing accommodation. Confirm your travel arrangements before committing to a distant beach or surf break.
