Tipping in Morocco is not like the United States. There is no 15 to 20 percent expectation. Instead, Morocco has a culture of small, frequent tips given to more people than most Westerners are used to. Understanding the system saves you from over-tipping (which marks you as a tourist) and under-tipping (which is genuinely rude).
Restaurants and Cafes
Leave 10 percent or round up generously. On a 150 MAD dinner, 15 to 20 MAD is appreciated. In cafes, rounding up from 12 to 15 MAD or leaving 2 to 5 MAD is standard. Tips go directly to the waiter and are a significant part of their income.
Hotels and Riads
Porter: 10 to 20 MAD per bag. Housekeeping: 10 to 20 MAD per night on the pillow. If staff arrange taxis, reservations, or give exceptional advice, 50 to 100 MAD at checkout is a genuine thank-you.
The Invisible Tipping Economy
This catches most visitors off guard. Parking attendants (gardiens) expect 2 to 5 MAD when you leave your car. Bathroom attendants expect 1 to 2 MAD. Gas station attendants expect 5 MAD. The person who helps carry grocery bags expects 5 MAD. None of these are optional in the sense that refusing creates awkwardness. Carry a pocket full of 1, 2, 5, and 10 MAD coins at all times.
Practical Tips
- Carry a coin purse. You will tip 10 to 15 times per day.
- Never tip with foreign currency. Dirhams only.
- At golf courses, tip caddies 50 to 100 MAD on top of their fee.
- When in doubt, 10 MAD is the universal Moroccan tip.
- If someone provides unsolicited but genuinely useful help, 10 to 20 MAD is appropriate.
