HIKING

Start with the Atlas Mountains and plan hiking routes around conditions, fitness and local guidance.

CHOOSE YOUR MOUNTAIN DAY

The Atlas overview and the High Atlas trekking guide answer different questions. Start with the overview if you are still choosing a region, comparing a village walk with a longer mountain trip, or deciding how hiking fits around your time in Marrakech. Use the trekking guide once you are planning a High Atlas route and need to think through access, guides, equipment and altitude.

Choose the route around the least experienced person in your group, the available daylight and the conditions for your dates. A route description is a starting point for a conversation with a local guide, rather than a promise that the path is open or suitable that day. Agree the distance, ascent, turnaround point and transport back before setting off.

Keep technical activities separate from ordinary walking plans. The trail-running guide covers moving faster on mountain terrain; the climbing guide addresses routes and protection. For a snow-focused outing, check the Oukaimeden guide rather than assuming winter hiking conditions mean a ski service is operating.

If you want more than one mountain day, leave room to adapt the programme. Weather, access and how you feel at altitude can change the plan. A flexible return and an agreed emergency contact are more useful than a timetable that depends on reaching every planned stop.

MOUNTAIN SAFETY

Before hiking, confirm the exact route, current access conditions, forecast, equipment and emergency plan. For the standard Toubkal ascent, arrange a licensed guide and read the High Atlas trekking guide. Fitness does not remove altitude, snow or weather hazards.
